Purposeful Action: How to Take Inspired Steps Without the Exhausting Hustle

There’s this Japanese concept called ikigai. Your “reason for being.” I first heard about it years ago and honestly, I kind of dismissed it as another self-help buzzword. But the thing that stuck with me – and I think about this a lot now – is that ikigai doesn’t ask you to go find your passion like it’s hidden under a rock somewhere. It asks you to notice what already lights you up.

Which sounds simple. It’s not.

Because most of us have been trained to push through, hustle harder, cross more things off the list. We’ve gotten really good at doing. What we’re not so good at? Noticing whether the doing actually feels right. Whether it’s taking us somewhere we want to go, or just… somewhere.

That’s what purposeful action is really about. Not productivity hacks. Not morning routines. It’s about doing things that feel aligned in your actual body, not just logical in your head. And here’s what nobody tells you: when action comes from that aligned place, it works differently. Things unfold easier. Doors open that you didn’t even know were there.

I know that sounds a little woo-woo. Stay with me.

I. Not All Action Is Created Equal

Okay so this is going to sound obvious but I promise it’s worth sitting with: the same action can produce completely different results depending on where you’re taking it from.

Let me explain what I mean.

In my work I talk about four different types of manifestation. Four ways people create their reality. And when you understand these, you start to see your own patterns everywhere.

The first one is Unconscious Dark. This is when you’re running around doing a million things but you have no idea you’re operating from fear or scarcity or just… desperation. You feel busy all the time. Exhausted. Like you’re on a hamster wheel. Things keep going sideways and you genuinely don’t understand why because you’re working so hard.

Then there’s Conscious Dark. This one’s sneaky. You know you’re coming from a low place – maybe you’re trying to prove someone wrong, or you’re scared of failing, or there’s some revenge energy in there. You know it. You do it anyway because you think the results will make up for how it feels getting there. Spoiler: they usually don’t. The success arrives but it tastes weird. Empty.

Unconscious Light is different. This is when good things just… happen. You’re in a naturally good mood, maybe you slept well, you’re not overthinking everything. Action flows. Things work out. You’re not entirely sure why but you’re definitely not complaining.

And then there’s Conscious Light.

This is the goal. This is purposeful action in its truest form. You’re deliberately creating from a good-feeling place. Not because you’re forcing positivity, but because you’ve done the work to get yourself there first. The action becomes an extension of who you’re being. It doesn’t feel like pushing. It feels like… flowing.

I go way deeper into all four types in our free eBook if you want the full breakdown. There’s also a complete 75-day program in my book that walks you through shifting from dark to light manifestation step by step.

The point here is: purposeful action isn’t about doing more. It’s about checking where you are on the emotional guidance scale before you do anything. Because action from alignment and action from desperation? Same behavior, totally different results.

II. Getting to That Aligned Place (The Part Everyone Skips)

So the obvious question becomes: how do you actually get to Conscious Light? How do you take action from that good-feeling place instead of the frantic scramble?

I’m going to be honest. It’s not complicated, but it does require slowing down. Which is the part everyone wants to skip.

I use something I call the VM Method. Three steps: Ground, Discover, Embody.

Ground first. Before you do anything. Seriously. You cannot take purposeful action when your nervous system is in overdrive. You just can’t see clearly from that place. So you have to land in your body first. Maybe that’s a few breaths. A walk. Five minutes of stillness. Whatever gets you out of your spinning head and back into the present moment.

Then discover. From that calmer place, ask yourself what action actually feels right. Not what you should do. Not what everyone’s expecting. What feels like it would be a relief to move toward? This requires knowing yourself pretty well. Self-awareness isn’t optional here. You need to be able to tell the difference between “I want this because it feels expansive” and “I think I should do this because I’m terrified of what happens if I don’t.”

That distinction matters more than I can say.

And then you embody. You take the step. Not from willpower. From alignment. You step into the energy of the person who already does this thing naturally. The person on their joyous journey. And from there, the action doesn’t feel like pushing a boulder. It feels like water finding its way downhill. Natural. Obvious.

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”

III. What If You’re Not Actually Procrastinating?

I want to say something that might be a little controversial.

Most advice about taking action treats procrastination like this enemy you have to defeat. More discipline. Better systems. Hack your brain into compliance.

But what if sometimes – not always, but sometimes – procrastination is actually guidance?

What if your resistance is telling you something?

Abraham Hicks talks about this. When you’re in alignment – when you’ve found a thought that feels even slightly better, when you’ve moved up just one notch on the emotional guidance scale – inspired action shows up. You don’t have to manufacture it. The idea comes. The motivation comes. The path becomes clear.

So instead of beating yourself up for not doing the thing, maybe try asking: am I avoiding this because I’m genuinely scared? Or am I avoiding it because something about this action isn’t right yet? Is the timing off? Is there a different path to this goal that would feel better?

Sometimes the answer is yes, you’re just scared, and you need to feel the fear and do it anyway. You need to respond rather than react to your own resistance.

And sometimes the answer is wait. Get aligned first. The action will be easier from there.

Discernment is the whole game here.

IV. The Weird Paradox of Caring and Letting Go

People get confused by this and honestly I understand why.

If I’m supposed to take purposeful action toward my goals… shouldn’t I be attached to those goals? Shouldn’t I care a lot about whether they happen?

Yes. And also no.

You can care deeply about something and still release your grip on how it has to unfold. That’s not apathy. That’s trust. It’s taking your aligned action and then letting the universe handle the rest. You’re not the only one creating here. You’re co-creating. Your job is your part, not every part.

This takes patience. Real patience, not gritting-your-teeth patience. And it helps to develop what I’d call a growth mindset – where whatever happens is information, not failure.

Trust vibrates high. Control vibrates low. And vibration affects everything.

Try This

I’ve got two practices for you below. One takes a couple minutes – use it anytime you’re about to do something and you want to check if it’s actually aligned. The other goes deeper, for when you’re feeling stuck and need to find your way back to clarity.

If you want someone to walk you through it, there’s a meditation called From Stuck to Started on our YouTube that pairs well with the Embody It exercise.

💧 Dip In: The Ikigai Quick Check

Time: 2 minutes | What you need: Nothing

Before you take an action – especially one you’ve been putting off or dreading – pause. Ask yourself four things:

What do I love about this?

Anything? Even one small thing? If the answer is nothing, that’s useful information.

What am I good at here?

Where are your natural strengths showing up?

Does this serve someone?

Is there a connection to others in this action?

Does this sustain me?

Energy, money, wellbeing – does this action support those?

The more genuine yeses you have, the more aligned the action probably is. If you’re coming up empty across the board… maybe it’s time to find a different route to your goal.

🌊 Embody It: Finding Your Aligned Next Step

Time: 15-20 minutes | What you need: Journal, somewhere quiet

The From Stuck to Started meditation works well with this if you want audio guidance.

Start by grounding. Close your eyes. Breathe – in through the nose, out through the mouth. Three times, slowly. Feel where your body is touching the chair or floor. Notice if you’re clenching anywhere and let it go. Your shoulders will probably drop. Your jaw will unclench. Wait until you feel your system settle a bit. You’ll know.

Then discover. Open your journal and write this at the top: “If I could only do ONE thing today that would actually move me forward, what would feel most aligned?”

Let yourself write without filtering. Some things will feel heavy when you write them – those are the “shoulds.” Some will feel lighter, maybe even exciting. Those are the ones to pay attention to. Circle whichever one creates the most genuine good feeling when you imagine doing it.

Now embody it. Close your eyes again. Picture yourself having already done that thing. Not doing it – done. How does that version of you feel? What’s their energy? What are they thinking now that it’s complete?

When you open your eyes, take one tiny step toward that action while holding onto that feeling. Just one. Don’t overthink it. That’s the bridge between wanting and doing.

Where You Are Is Fine

Look. If you’ve been beating yourself up about not taking enough action, or taking action that doesn’t seem to go anywhere – can you take a breath for a second?

Where you are right now is where you are. The fact that you’re reading this, thinking about this stuff at all – that’s already something shifting.

Purposeful action isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being aligned. And you can find alignment right now. This moment. Wherever you’re starting from.

Can you find one thought that feels a little better than the one you were just thinking? Can you reach for the action that feels even slightly more right than the one you were forcing yourself toward?

That’s it. That’s the whole thing. One step. One notch. Then another.

Common Questions About Purposeful Action

Moving from stuck to inspired

Purpose isn't usually found through thinking harder - it's discovered by paying attention to what already lights you up. Notice what activities make you lose track of time, what conversations energize you, what problems you naturally want to solve. Your purpose often lives at the intersection of what you love, what you're good at, what serves others, and what sustains you. Start small: follow curiosity, take aligned action on what feels right, and let your purpose reveal itself through experience rather than analysis.

Procrastination often signals that you're either not aligned with the action or not in the right emotional state to take it. Instead of forcing through, try grounding yourself first - a few deep breaths, a short walk, or five minutes of stillness. Then ask: does this action genuinely feel right, or am I avoiding it because something's off? Sometimes the solution is finding a different path to your goal. Other times, it's simply raising your vibration first so the action becomes easier. Purposeful action flows naturally when you're aligned - force creates resistance.

Letting go doesn't mean not caring - it means releasing your grip on exactly how and when things unfold. Take your aligned actions, then trust the process. The energy of trust vibrates much higher than the energy of desperate attachment. Think of it like planting a seed: you prepare the soil, plant with intention, water consistently - then you let nature do its work. You don't dig up the seed every day to check on it. Detachment is about doing your part and then allowing the universe to do its part.

Alignment feels like relief, not pressure. When you're aligned, action feels more like flowing downstream than pushing a boulder uphill. You'll notice that time passes differently - hours might feel like minutes. There's a sense of rightness even when things are challenging. Your emotional guidance system is your best indicator: if you're consistently feeling good (hopeful, eager, appreciative, passionate) while doing something, you're likely aligned. If you're constantly feeling drained, resentful, or anxious, that's guidance to recalibrate.
