Alignment of Intentions: Stop Chasing Goals That Aren’t Yours

In the 11th century, a Muslim Persian physician named Ibn Sina wrote a medical encyclopedia so comprehensive that European universities used it for the next 500 years. But here’s what most people don’t know: Ibn Sina was equally fascinated by something we can’t measure with instruments. He spent years studying how the soul perceives truth – and he concluded that clarity doesn’t come from acquiring more knowledge. It comes from removing what obscures.

He wrote: “The soul is like a clear mirror; if it is polished and clean, it reflects the light of truth.”

That’s a pretty good way to think about what we’re doing when we talk about alignment of intentions.

Because here’s the thing most manifestation advice gets backwards: alignment isn’t something you chase. It’s something you uncover. Your desires, your dreams, that life you keep imagining – the signal is already there. The question is whether you’ve polished the mirror enough to see it clearly.

In my younger years especially I was constantly pushed and expected to follow traditional conventions. Never did anyone ask me what I wanted. It was not until my late twenties I started to actually think about what I wanted, and start to dream for myself. It was definitely a wonderful time to grow and explore. For much too long I was doing what others were telling me was the best thing, rather than me actually assessing what I wanted, what would bring me joy.

What you’ll discover in this piece isn’t a five-step formula for getting what you want faster. It’s something better: a way to know – really know, in your bones – what you actually want in the first place. And then, how to become the kind of person who naturally attracts it.

“The soul is like a clear mirror; if it is polished and clean, it reflects the light of truth.”

— Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Muslim Persian Philosopher & Physician, 980-1037 CE

I. What Alignment Actually Means (And What It Doesn’t)

Let’s clear something up right away. When we talk about aligning your intentions, we’re not talking about positive thinking. We’re not talking about vision boards (though those can be lovely). We’re definitely not talking about convincing yourself to want something hard enough that the universe eventually gives in.

Alignment is a vibrational state. It’s what happens when your thoughts, your emotions, and your energy are all pointing in the same direction – and that direction matches what you genuinely desire. Not what you think you should desire. Not what would impress other people. What actually lights you up.

The Emotional Guidance Scale is one of the most useful tools for understanding this. Your emotions aren’t random – they’re feedback. They tell you, moment by moment, whether your thoughts are aligned with your higher self or working against it. When you feel good, you’re aligned. When you feel bad, there’s resistance somewhere.

Simple enough in theory. In practice, we’ve spent years learning to ignore that feedback system entirely.

Most of us walk around with intentions that aren’t ours. We absorbed them from parents, from culture, from that one comment someone made when we were fourteen. And we wonder why, even when we achieve things, there’s still this hollow feeling. Why the promotion didn’t feel the way we thought it would. Why the relationship that looked perfect on paper still leaves us restless at 2am.

That hollowness? That’s misalignment. Your soul knows. It always knows.

II. The Four Types of Manifestation (And Why Alignment Changes Everything)

Here’s something that took me years to understand: you’re always manifesting. Always. The question isn’t whether you’re creating your reality – you are, whether you like it or not. The question is what kind of manifestation you’re doing.

We teach four types of manifestation, and understanding them is like finally getting the manual to a machine you’ve been operating blind:

Unconscious Dark Manifestation – This is when you’re creating from fear, doubt, or worry without realizing it. You focus on what you don’t want, imagine worst-case scenarios, and then feel surprised when difficult situations keep appearing. Most people live here most of the time. No judgment – it’s the default setting.

Conscious Dark Manifestation – This is when you know you’re focused on the negative but you do it anyway. You’ve had a hard day, you’re wallowing, and you’re aware you’re wallowing. It happens. At least there’s awareness here.

Unconscious Light Manifestation – Those happy accidents. You stumble into good fortune without quite knowing how. A great parking spot. A chance encounter that leads somewhere wonderful. You’re in a good mood and life reflects it back – you just don’t realize you’re the one creating it.

Conscious Light Manifestation – This is the goal. This is when you deliberately align your vibration with what you desire. You’re aware of your emotional state, you’re reaching for thoughts that feel good, and you’re letting the Universe work with you instead of against you.

Alignment of intentions is how you move from the first three into that fourth space. It’s how you stop accidentally creating and start deliberately choosing.

Related: If you’ve been manifesting abundance but feeling like something’s missing, this is often why. The techniques work – but only when the intention underneath them is actually yours.

III. How to Know If Your Intentions Are Actually Aligned

This is the question I hear most often: “How do I know if what I want is really what I want?”

Your body knows. That’s the short answer. Your body is extraordinarily intelligent, and it will tell you the truth even when your mind is busy constructing elaborate justifications.

When you think about an intention that’s truly aligned:

Your chest opens. You might notice you’re breathing more deeply without trying. There’s a sense of expansion – like you just stepped outside after being in a stuffy room. You feel lighter. Even if the intention involves challenge or stretching yourself, thinking about it doesn’t feel heavy. There’s excitement mixed with any nervousness.

When you think about an intention that’s misaligned:

Your shoulders creep toward your ears. Your jaw tightens. You might notice shallow breathing, or that you’ve been holding your breath entirely. There’s a sense of contraction – of making yourself smaller. Even if you’re excited about the goal, thinking about it brings more “should” energy than “want” energy.

This is why connecting with your soul’s calling matters so much. When you’re working from that place, the body check becomes almost automatic. You just… know.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Sometimes you’ll check in with an intention and notice resistance – but the resistance isn’t about the intention being wrong. It’s about fear. About old stories. About parts of you that learned it wasn’t safe to want big things.

The difference between “this isn’t my intention” and “this is my intention but I’m scared” can be subtle. Here’s how to tell: misaligned intentions feel heavy and dull. Aligned intentions that scare you feel bright and charged – the fear has electricity to it, not deadness.

IV. The VM Method for Aligning Your Intentions

We’ve developed a three-part approach that makes this practical rather than theoretical. We call it Ground, Discover, Embody – and it works whether you’re setting intentions for the first time or recalibrating ones that have gone fuzzy.

Ground

You cannot access your true intentions from a dysregulated state. Full stop. If you’re anxious, overwhelmed, or running on adrenaline, your nervous system is in protection mode – and protection mode only knows how to focus on threats, not possibilities.

Before you do any work on what you want, you have to arrive. Slow your breath. Feel your feet on the floor. Let your body remember that right now, in this moment, you’re safe. Mindful breathing is one of the fastest ways to get there – even three conscious breaths can shift everything.

Discover

Once you’re grounded, you can start asking the real questions. Not “what should I want?” but “what genuinely makes me happy?” Not “what would impress people?” but “what would I choose if no one was watching?”

This discovery phase requires honesty. Radical, uncomfortable honesty. You might find that the career you’ve been chasing was always about proving something to your father. You might realize the relationship goal was about filling a void rather than sharing a life. That’s not failure – that’s clarity. That’s the mirror getting polished.

Gratitude helps here. When you notice what already lights you up, you start to see patterns. The activities that make time disappear. The conversations that leave you energized instead of drained. Follow that thread.

Embody

This is where most people stop, and it’s exactly where the magic happens. Embodiment means you don’t just know what you want – you become the person who naturally attracts it. You don’t wait to feel abundant until you have money; you cultivate the feeling of abundance now and let the circumstances follow.

We’re not talking about faking it. We’re talking about accessing the emotional state you think you’ll feel when you get what you want – and then living from that state. When you do this consistently, you stop working against the current. You stop trying to drag yourself upstream. You let the river carry you.

Related: Purposeful action becomes much easier from this place. When you’re aligned, you don’t have to force yourself to do things. The right actions feel obvious, even effortless and so easy.

This is such a powerful method. It is the easiest I have found to implement. Starting even with the end state emotion can be so powerful. One of my most important goals is to wake up energized, refreshed and excited about every day no matter what is ahead. This in turn has brought many things into my life that is creating this end state desired goal. The goal is yours to create. Just ask what it is you want to experience and feel ultimately. Allow the Law of Attraction to bring all the components to make that happen.

Alignment of Intentions: Embracing the Journey to Your Best Self

V. When Doubt Creeps In (Because It Will)

Let me be honest with you: doubt is part of the journey. Not a sign that you’re doing it wrong. Not proof that your intention isn’t real. Just… part of it.

The problem isn’t having doubt. The problem is making doubt mean something it doesn’t mean. Doubt shows up for everyone. It showed up for Ibn Sina. It showed up for every person who ever created anything meaningful. The question is whether you let it run the show or just notice it, nod at it, and keep going.

Here’s what helps: remember that doubt is just a point on the Emotional Guidance Scale. It’s not the truth. It’s not reality. It’s a vibrational state, and vibrational states can shift. Your job isn’t to eliminate doubt – it’s to reach for something that feels a little bit better. Just one notch up.

Where you are is perfect. And you can feel better from here.

Sometimes that means going from doubt to frustration – and frustration is actually progress, even though it doesn’t feel positive. Frustration has energy. Frustration means you still care. From there, you can reach for hope. From hope, you can reach for optimism. One step at a time.

Affirmations can help with this – not the kind where you repeat things you don’t believe, but the kind where you find statements that genuinely feel a little better. Believable upgrades.

VI. Letting Go Without Giving Up

One of the biggest paradoxes of aligned intention is this: you have to want it and not need it at the same time.

I know. I know. That sounds impossible.

But think about it this way: when you need something, you’re vibrating from lack. You’re sending out a signal that says “I don’t have this thing and I’m not okay without it.” And the Universe, being a very literal mirror, reflects that lack right back.

When you want something but you’re genuinely okay either way, you’re vibrating from wholeness. You’re saying “I would love this AND I’m already complete.” That’s a completely different frequency. That’s the frequency things come to.

Detachment doesn’t mean not caring. It means caring without gripping. It means trusting that if this particular form doesn’t manifest, something even better will. It means holding your intentions with open hands instead of clenched fists.

This is where a productive morning routine helps. When you start each day grounded and aligned, the grip loosens naturally. You don’t have to force detachment. It emerges from stability.

Now, Let’s Practice

Enough talking about alignment. Let’s actually experience it. I’ve put together two practices for you – one quick, one deeper. Both will help you feel, in your body, what aligned intention actually is.

💧 Dip In: The Alignment Check-In

Time: 3 minutes | What you need: Nothing – do this anywhere

This is a quick body-based check you can do anytime you’re uncertain about whether an intention is truly yours.

Step 1: Take three slow breaths. Let your shoulders drop. Feel your feet.

Step 2: Bring to mind the intention you’re questioning. Don’t analyze it – just hold it lightly in your awareness, like you’re showing it to yourself.

Step 3: Notice your body. Does your chest feel open or contracted? Is there expansion or tightening? Does your breath flow easily or catch?

Step 4: Ask yourself: “Does this feel like a ‘should’ or a ‘want’?” Trust the first answer that comes.

Step 5: If it’s a “should” – no judgment. You’ve just gained valuable information. If it’s a genuine “want” that feels scary, notice the difference: aligned fear has electricity to it. Misaligned goals feel dead and heavy.

That’s it. Three minutes. You can do this in your car before a meeting, in bed before sleep, standing in line for coffee. Your body is always ready to tell you the truth.

🌊 Embody It: Intention Clarity Journey

Time: 15-20 minutes | What you need: Quiet space, journal optional

This deeper practice walks you through the full Ground-Discover-Embody process for one specific intention.

GROUND (5 minutes):

Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Take ten slow breaths, letting each exhale be longer than the inhale. With each breath, imagine roots growing from the base of your spine down into the earth. Feel supported. Feel held. Let your nervous system settle completely. You’re safe. You have time. There’s nowhere else to be.

DISCOVER (7 minutes):

From this grounded state, ask yourself: “What do I genuinely want?” Not what you should want. Not what would make others proud. What would you choose if absolutely no one was watching and no one would ever know?

Let images, words, or feelings arise without editing. Notice which ones make your heart open and which ones feel like obligations wearing desire’s clothing.

When something feels true – really true – stay with it. Let it clarify. Ask: “What is the feeling underneath this desire? What do I think having this will give me?”

That feeling is the real treasure. The external manifestation is just one possible form.

EMBODY (5 minutes):

Now, access that feeling. Don’t wait for the external thing to feel it – feel it now. What would it be like to already have what you desire? How would you carry yourself? How would you breathe? What would your face look like?

Let your body shift into that state. Let your cells remember. This is who you’re becoming. This is the vibration you’re learning to hold.

When you’re ready, take three deep breaths and gently open your eyes. Know that you can return to this state anytime. It’s not something you have to create – it’s something you’re uncovering.

The Mirror Is Already Clear

Ibn Sina understood something that most of us spend years learning: clarity isn’t something you build. It’s something you reveal.

Your true intentions are already there. Your alignment is already possible. You’re not starting from zero – you’re just polishing the mirror. Removing the smudges of other people’s expectations. Wiping away the dust of old stories.

And wherever you are in this process is exactly where you need to be. If you feel far from alignment, that’s okay. If you feel close, that’s okay too. There’s no deadline. There’s no race. There’s just you, and your intentions, and the beautiful work of getting clearer.

One notch at a time. One breath at a time. One moment of honesty at a time.

You’ve got this.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alignment of Intentions

How do I overcome doubt while trying to manifest? +

Doubt is a normal part of the manifestation journey - not a sign you're doing something wrong. The key is recognizing that doubt is simply a point on the Emotional Guidance Scale, not the truth about your desires. Instead of fighting doubt, try reaching for a thought that feels slightly better. Move from doubt to frustration (which has more energy), then from frustration to hope. Your job isn't to eliminate doubt completely - it's to keep moving up the scale, one notch at a time. Where you are is perfect, and you can always reach for something that feels a little bit better.

How do I let go and detach from my manifestation without giving up on it? +

Detachment isn't about not caring - it's about caring without gripping. When you need something, you vibrate from lack, sending out a signal of "I don't have this and I'm not okay." When you want something but are genuinely okay either way, you vibrate from wholeness. The secret is to fully embody the feeling you think you'll have when the manifestation arrives - and feel it now. This shifts you from chasing to allowing. Trust that if this particular form doesn't manifest, something even better will. Hold your intentions with open hands instead of clenched fists.

What is 'self-concept' and why is it important for manifestation? +

Self-concept is the collection of beliefs you hold about who you are - your identity, your worthiness, what you deserve, and what's possible for you. It's the foundation of aligned intention because you can only manifest what matches your self-concept. If deep down you believe you're not worthy of abundance, love, or success, your manifestations will be limited by that belief, no matter how many vision boards you create. When you shift your self-concept - when you genuinely see yourself as someone who deserves and attracts what you desire - your external reality naturally reshapes itself to match.

Why do I keep self-sabotaging my manifestations? +

Self-sabotage is usually unconscious misalignment - parts of you that don't feel safe with the very thing you consciously want. This is Unconscious Dark Manifestation at work: you're creating from hidden fears without realizing it. Often, self-sabotage stems from old beliefs about worthiness, fear of change, or worry about what success might cost you. The solution isn't to fight yourself, but to get curious. What is the sabotaging part trying to protect you from? When you understand the fear underneath, you can address it with compassion and gradually shift into Conscious Light Manifestation - where your whole self is aligned with your intentions.

How do I know if I'm aligned with my purpose? +

Your body is your most reliable guide. When you're aligned with your purpose, thinking about it creates expansion - your chest opens, breathing deepens, and there's a sense of lightness even if the path feels challenging. When you're misaligned, you'll notice contraction - tightened shoulders, shallow breath, and a heavy "should" energy instead of genuine "want" energy. Another sign of alignment is that time seems to disappear when you're engaged in purpose-connected activities. The actions feel natural rather than forced. If you're uncertain, try the body-check practice: ground yourself with breath, bring your purpose to mind, and notice whether your body expands or contracts. It always knows.
