The Surprising Power of a Joyous Journey Over Any Achievement

In 1978, researchers at Northwestern University made a discovery that confused everyone. They tracked lottery winners and accident survivors for an entire year. The lottery winners – people who suddenly had everything they ever wanted – weren’t dramatically happier than before. And the accident survivors? They’d returned to nearly the same happiness levels they had before their lives changed forever.

Scientists called it “hedonic adaptation.” I call it the cosmic joke most of us spend our whole lives missing.

The poets of China’s Tang Dynasty – that golden age from 618 to 907 AD when creativity spilled across the empire like morning light – understood something we keep forgetting. They had a proverb that still makes me smile every time I read it:

“A bird does not sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”

– Chinese Proverb, Tang Dynasty

Think about that for a moment. The bird doesn’t wait until it has figured everything out. It doesn’t postpone its song until conditions are perfect. It sings because singing is what birds do. The song IS the point.

And here’s the beautiful thing: You have a song too. We all do. The question isn’t whether you’ll find happiness at some destination. The question is whether you’ll let yourself sing along the way.

Most of my career was plagued by one deadline after another. No matter how successful the outcome, I felt like I kept working constantly, and with each achievement another deadline came up before I could even celebrate. I was on a constant exhausting hamster wheel. On paper, everything looked amazing, but when I look at it I remember the constant burnout and exhaustion I felt. After finally understanding manifestation I realized I never before enjoyed the journey in anything. Whether in school, my marriage to my ex-husband, or at work – it was all constant exhaustion one thing after another. Now I make sure I take my time, enjoy the journey, because milestones and achievements only feel as good as the journey to get there. Whatever I want to do I make sure to enjoy it as much as possible. This has changed my life to one of constant joy, ease and wonder. My life now feels magical and by design. I feel fully empowered in all that is coming.

I. What Is a Joyous Journey, Really?

Here’s what nobody tells you about goals: The way you feel while chasing them is exactly the way you’ll feel when you catch them.

If you spend years feeling stressed, desperate, and “not there yet” while pursuing success, guess what greets you when success arrives? That same stressed, desperate feeling – now wearing a fancier outfit.

This is why understanding the Emotional Guidance Scale matters so much. Your vibration during the journey becomes your vibration at the destination. They’re not separate things. (You can explore where you currently are on the scale here on our Emotional Guidance Scale page – it’s one of the most useful tools I know for understanding why you feel what you feel.)

A joyous journey isn’t about pretending everything is wonderful when it isn’t. It’s about understanding that life isn’t happening TO you on the way to somewhere else. Life IS the way. Each step, each moment, each breath – that’s not the waiting room. That’s the main event.

II. The Destination Trap (And Why Achievements Feel Empty)

I want to tell you about four different ways people create their lives. In my book, I call them the Four Types of Manifestation, and understanding them changed everything for me.

Some people create from Unconscious Dark Manifestation – they’re attracting experiences from fear and lack without even realizing it. Others practice Conscious Dark Manifestation – they achieve goals through sheer willpower and force, driven by fear of failure or need to prove something. They reach the destination… and feel strangely hollow.

You probably know someone like this. Maybe you’ve been this person. (I certainly have.) The promotion arrives and you immediately worry about the next one. The money comes and you immediately fear losing it. The relationship begins and you immediately start protecting yourself from its ending.

Then there’s Unconscious Light Manifestation – those naturally lucky people who seem to attract wonderful things without trying. They’re in a high vibration without consciously knowing why.

But the path we’re learning here? That’s Conscious Light Manifestation – deliberately creating from joy, from alignment, from the high-vibration feelings that make the journey itself delicious. This is where the joyous journey lives.

III. The Secret: You’re Chasing Feelings, Not Things

Here’s the most important thing I can tell you: You don’t actually want the car, the house, the relationship, the career, or the number in your bank account. What you want is the FEELING you think those things will give you.

Security. Freedom. Love. Peace. Joy.

The external thing is just one possible path to that feeling. But here’s what the Tang Dynasty poets knew, what the research shows, and what I’ve seen work in hundreds of sessions with clients: You can access those feelings NOW. You don’t have to wait.

When you understand mindfulness, you realize that the present moment is the only place feelings actually happen. You can’t feel joy yesterday. You can’t feel peace next month. You can only feel them now.

And here’s the delicious paradox: When you allow yourself to feel good NOW – when you choose the joyous journey over the stressful chase – you actually become a better match for the things you want. Abraham Hicks calls this alignment. I call it finally understanding the game.

This is the absolute hardest thing to teach my clients. We are all programmed to suffer to achieve anything, and then when we achieve what we want, we wonder why we are still unfulfilled. I start with getting clients to learn to enjoy small tasks. While working, find ways to make the work more fun. When doing chores, find ways to make it more enjoyable. These small changes are the best way to start.

IV. Ground, Discover, Embody: Your Path to Joyous Journey

At Vibration Mentor, we use a simple framework called the VM Method to help people move from destination-obsession to joyous-journey living. It has three steps:

Ground – First, we arrive in the present moment. We release the mental chatter about where we “should” be, what we “should” have accomplished by now, and all the exhausting comparisons. This is like the bird settling on its branch before it sings. You have to BE somewhere before you can enjoy being there. Practices like stillness and tranquility help us Ground.

Discover – Next, we uncover what genuinely makes us happy – not what we’ve been told should make us happy, not what looks good on paper, but what actually lights us up inside. What feelings are you really seeking? This requires honest exploration. It requires deep gratitude for what already brings you joy, however small.

Embody – Finally, we make joyous journey living our natural state. Not something we do occasionally, but who we ARE. We practice contentment not as settling for less, but as appreciating NOW while still moving toward more. We learn that celebrating small wins along the path doesn’t slow us down – it fuels us forward.

V. Making Joy Your Default Setting

“But what about my goals?” I hear you ask. “Won’t I become unmotivated if I’m happy now?”

Quite the opposite, actually. When you’re in a state of joy, you have MORE energy, not less. You see opportunities you were blind to before. You attract people and circumstances that match your elevated vibration. You take inspired action instead of desperate action.

Developing a growth mindset doesn’t mean constantly pushing and striving in misery. It means being curious about your expansion while appreciating where you already are.

Remember: Where you are is perfect. You’re not behind. You haven’t missed anything. You’re exactly where you need to be to learn exactly what you need to learn. The joyous journey doesn’t start when you “arrive” somewhere. It starts the moment you decide to enjoy the path you’re already walking.

The Importance of a Joyous Journey throughout Life: More Significant than any Destination or Achievement

Dip In: One Beautiful Thing

Time: 2-3 minutes | What you’ll need: Nothing but this moment

Right now – yes, right now as you’re reading this – pause and look around you. Find ONE beautiful thing about THIS moment in your journey.

It doesn’t have to be grand. Maybe it’s the light coming through your window. The fact that you can read. The breath that just filled your lungs without you having to think about it. The cup of something warm beside you. The fact that you’re someone who seeks growth.

Name it. Out loud if you can, silently if you need to.

“Right now, one beautiful thing is _______”

Feel it. Not just think it – FEEL the tiny wave of appreciation that comes when you notice goodness that was already there, waiting to be seen.

This is joyous journey in its simplest form. This moment, right here, has beauty. You just proved it. And if THIS moment has beauty, so does the next one. And the next.

Carry this practice with you today. Every hour, find one beautiful thing. Watch how your day transforms.

Embody It: Journey Joy Journaling

Time: 15-20 minutes | What you’ll need: Journal, quiet space

This practice comes from Day 56 of our Conscious Creation program, and it’s one of my favorites. Get your journal and find a comfortable, quiet space.

Part 1: Ground (3 minutes)

Close your eyes. Take three slow breaths. With each exhale, release any pressure about where you “should” be by now. Let go of timelines. Let go of comparisons. Arrive fully in this moment. You’re exactly where you need to be.

Part 2: Discover (7 minutes)

Open your eyes and begin writing about the joyful aspects of your journey so far. Don’t censor or edit – just let it flow. Consider:

  • Small pleasures that brighten your daily experience
  • Challenges that revealed your strength
  • People who’ve walked alongside you
  • Unexpected turns that led to beautiful discoveries
  • Lessons that shaped your growth

Part 3: Embody (5 minutes)

Read back what you wrote. Feel the gratitude for each element. Then close with this affirmation, writing it slowly and deliberately:

“My journey is my destination. Every step is sacred. I am already home.”

Common Questions About the Joyous Journey

Finding joy in the path, not just the destination

This is one of the most beautiful paradoxes of conscious living. Contentment and growth aren't opposites - they're partners. When you appreciate what you have NOW, you raise your vibration. From that higher vibration, you naturally attract more. Think of it like this: a tree doesn't hate its current height while growing taller. It's fully tree at every stage. You can fully enjoy TODAY while excitedly moving toward tomorrow.

This is incredibly common and it's not your fault - you've likely been practicing what we call Conscious Dark Manifestation: achieving through willpower, stress, and "I'll be happy when..." thinking. The way you feel during the journey becomes the way you feel at the destination. If you arrive stressed, you'll experience the achievement through that stressed lens. The solution isn't to stop having goals - it's to enjoy the path toward them. That joy travels with you to the finish line.

Start small and specific. Instead of trying to "be present all the time" (which feels impossible), practice noticing ONE beautiful thing about right now. It could be tiny - the temperature of the air, a color you like, the fact that you're breathing. This trains your brain to find good in the current moment. Do this a few times daily, and you'll start automatically noticing present-moment gifts. The Emotional Guidance Scale can help you see where you are and reach for a slightly better feeling thought - you don't have to leap to joy instantly.

Meaning isn't found - it's created through attention. What you focus on expands. If you look for beauty in your coffee cup, your commute, your conversations, you'll find it. If you look for problems, you'll find those instead. Try this: for one week, ask yourself each morning, "What small thing might delight me today?" Then actively look for it. By the week's end, everyday life will feel richer because you've trained yourself to notice its richness.

That "behind" feeling comes from comparing your journey to someone else's destination - or to a timeline that was never real to begin with. Here's the truth: you cannot be behind on YOUR path. It's uniquely yours. Every detour taught you something. Every delay prepared you for something. Try replacing "I should be further along" with "I'm exactly where I need to be to learn what I need to learn." It sounds simple, but this reframe changes everything. You're not late - you're right on time for YOUR life.
