Embracing Challenges: Transform Obstacles Into Your Greatest Teachers

In 15th-century Japan, when a beloved tea bowl cracked or shattered, artisans developed a practice called Kintsugi – the art of repairing broken pottery with gold. Rather than hiding the damage or discarding the piece entirely, they illuminated every crack with precious metal. The philosophy was radical: the breaking and mending become part of the object’s story, making it more valuable and beautiful than before.

This ancient wisdom holds a profound truth about embracing challenges in our own lives. What if your difficulties aren’t obstacles blocking your path – but the very material from which your greatest growth emerges?

I remember initially I used to feel that my divorce was such a failure. Now like so many others, I’m grateful and know it was the best possible outcome and have no ill or hard feelings. It took years to realize this, but now I couldn’t be happier.

I. Why We Create Challenges Differently

Here’s something that might surprise you: we’re all manifesting our response to challenges all the time – we’re just doing it in different ways. In my work, I teach about four types of manifestation, and understanding them changes everything about how you face difficulty.

Unconscious Dark Manifestation happens when we react to challenges from fear, panic, or despair without even realizing we’re doing it. The layoff notice arrives, and we spiral into worst-case scenarios. The relationship ends, and we convince ourselves we’ll never find love again. We’re creating from a low vibrational place – and attracting more experiences that match that frequency.

Conscious Dark Manifestation is trickier to spot. This is when we deliberately use challenge as fuel – but the fuel is revenge, proving others wrong, or fear of failure. You might achieve impressive results this way. The promotion comes, the business succeeds. But the victory feels hollow because you created it from scarcity, not abundance. The journey was painful, so the destination can’t fully satisfy.

Unconscious Light Manifestation describes those people who seem to bounce back from anything without trying. They don’t know why challenges don’t rattle them – they just naturally maintain a high vibration. It’s wonderful when it happens, but it’s not deliberate, so it’s not always reliable.

Conscious Light Manifestation – this is where real transformation lives. This is deliberately choosing to see challenges as catalysts for growth while maintaining alignment with what you truly want. It’s the Kintsugi approach: acknowledging the break, filling it with gold, and emerging more beautiful for having been broken. Not pretending everything is fine, but consciously choosing your vibrational response.

II. The VM Method for Embracing Challenges

When a challenge arrives – and it will, because contrast is part of life – there’s a three-phase approach that transforms how you experience it. I call this the VM Method: Ground, Discover, Embody.

GROUND: First, arrive in a calm, regulated state. You cannot see clearly from panic. When challenge strikes, our nervous system often hijacks our thinking – everything looks worse than it is. Before you strategize, before you react, before you do anything – ground yourself. A few conscious breaths, feet on the floor, hand on heart. This isn’t avoidance. It’s creating the conditions for wisdom to emerge. Building resilience starts with this simple practice.

DISCOVER: From this grounded place, get curious. What is this challenge actually showing you? What do you truly want – not what you think you should want, but what would genuinely make you feel alive? Sometimes a job loss reveals you were staying somewhere that dimmed your light. Sometimes a health challenge awakens you to what truly matters. The challenge isn’t the enemy. It’s the messenger. Cultivating a growth mindset helps you see this clearly.

EMBODY: Now, here’s where the magic happens. Embody the person who has already navigated this challenge successfully. Not by pretending, but by genuinely shifting your vibrational state to match your desired outcome. How would that version of you carry themselves? What would they think? How would they feel? This isn’t fantasy – it’s alignment. When your inner state matches what you want to create, the external circumstances begin to shift.

Embracing Challenges: The Art of Strong Resilience

III. Moving Up When Life Pulls You Down

When you’re in the thick of a challenge, jumping straight to joy isn’t realistic – and trying to force it actually creates more resistance. This is where the Emotional Guidance Scale becomes your compass.

The scale ranges from the lowest vibrations – fear, grief, powerlessness – up through anger, frustration, hope, optimism, and finally to joy and freedom at the top. Here’s what most people don’t understand: moving from despair to anger is actually progress. Anger has energy. Anger says “this isn’t acceptable” – which is far more empowering than “I’m helpless.”

The goal isn’t to leap from powerlessness to joy in one bound. The goal is to move up just one notch. Can you find a thought that feels slightly better than the one you’re thinking now? That’s success. That’s progress. That’s you, in real time, raising your vibration and changing what you attract.

Sometimes embracing challenges means finding the courage to feel what you’re feeling without judgment. Other times it means releasing old stories about what challenges mean. And sometimes it simply means remembering your own self-worth – that you are capable, that you have navigated difficulty before, that this too shall transform.

From the emotional guidance scale, feeling angry is a stronger and better emotion than feeling sad and depressed. Even helping clients to feel angry and slowly come up the scale is so much healthier and helps get them to a much better place later on. Trying to have clients go from depressed to happy is not possible consistently. Helping them to slowly notch up one at a time is better. For example I had one client who was unhappily married, and helping him to become angry at the injustices he was feeling, helped him to slowly get to feeling content, and then excited about his future.

“The wound is the place where the Light enters you.”

— Rumi

IV. Challenges as Contrast, Not Punishment

One of the most liberating shifts you can make is understanding that challenges aren’t punishments – they’re contrast. Contrast is simply life showing you what you don’t want so you can clarify what you do want.

How would you know you want financial freedom if you’d never felt the stress of scarcity? How would you recognize a loving relationship if you’d never experienced one that wasn’t? The challenge isn’t your enemy – it’s your clarifier. Every “no, not this” moment is actually pointing you toward “yes, this instead.”

This perspective doesn’t minimize pain. The difficulty is real. But it does transform it from meaningless suffering into purposeful information. You’re not being punished. You’re being redirected. Developing adaptability helps you flow with these redirections rather than fighting against them.

You might also find that examining your limiting beliefs about challenges reveals patterns you didn’t know you carried. Perhaps you inherited the idea that struggle is noble, that things worth having must be hard-won, or that ease is somehow suspect. These beliefs shape how you experience every obstacle.

Embracing Challenges: The Art of Strong Resilience

Where you are right now is perfect. If you’re in the middle of something hard, please hear this: there is nothing wrong with you. The challenge doesn’t mean you failed at manifesting. It means you’re human, living a human life, with all its beautiful, messy contrast. And from this very place, you can begin to shift. One notch at a time. One better-feeling thought at a time.

💧 Dip In: The One-Notch Shift

Time: 3 minutes | What you’ll need: Just yourself

When you’re facing a challenge, you don’t need to force yourself into positivity. That usually backfires anyway. Instead, try reaching for something that feels just slightly better than where you are now.

Try this:

1. Name what you’re feeling right now. Just acknowledge it honestly: “I feel overwhelmed” or “I feel scared” or “I feel angry.”

2. Place your hand on your heart. Take three slow breaths.

3. Ask yourself: “What thought would feel just a little bit better than this?” Not amazing – just slightly better. It might be “I’ve survived hard things before” or “At least I’m aware of how I feel” or “This feeling won’t last forever.”

4. Reach for that thought. Let it settle. Breathe.

Notice: you’re not trying to be happy. You’re just moving one notch up. That’s enough. That’s everything.

🌊 Embody It: The Kintsugi Meditation

Time: 15-20 minutes | What you’ll need: Quiet space, journal optional

For a guided version of this practice, try Finding Light in Challenging Moments on our YouTube channel.

This meditation takes you through the full Ground → Discover → Embody process, using the Kintsugi metaphor to transform how you relate to a current challenge.

Part 1: Ground (5 minutes)

Settle into a comfortable position. Close your eyes. Feel your body supported by the chair or floor beneath you. Take five slow, deep breaths – in through the nose, out through the mouth. With each exhale, let your shoulders drop. Let your jaw soften. You’re safe here. Nothing needs to be fixed in this moment. Just be.

Part 2: Discover (5 minutes)

From this grounded place, bring to mind a challenge you’re currently facing. Don’t dive into the story – just acknowledge its presence. Now imagine this challenge as a beautiful pottery bowl that has cracked. Look at the cracks without judgment. Ask gently: What is this showing me? What do I truly want? What would feel genuinely good – not what I think I should want, but what my heart actually desires? Let the answers arise naturally. There’s no rush.

Part 3: Embody (5-10 minutes)

Now visualize yourself filling each crack in the bowl with liquid gold – your wisdom, your growth, your learning. Watch the gold flow into every fracture, illuminating rather than hiding. See the bowl becoming more beautiful, more valuable, more uniquely yours because of the repair.

Now become the person who has already moved through this challenge. How do they carry themselves? What do they know that you’re still learning? How do they feel? Let yourself feel it now – not someday, but now. This is embodiment. This is Conscious Light Manifestation.

Integration:

When you’re ready, gently open your eyes. If you have a journal, write down any insights. Return to this practice whenever a challenge feels heavy. The more you do it, the more natural it becomes to fill your cracks with gold.

Your Joyous Journey Through Challenges

Embracing challenges isn’t about pretending they don’t hurt or forcing yourself to be grateful when you’re not. It’s about choosing – consciously, deliberately – to meet difficulty with your full humanity and wisdom. To ground yourself before reacting. To discover what the contrast is teaching you. To embody the version of yourself who has already found the gold in the cracks.

This is a joyous journey – not because it’s always happy, but because it’s meaningful. Because you’re not a victim of your circumstances. Because you hold the key and the power to transform any challenge into your teacher.

Be easy with yourself. Where you are is perfect. One notch at a time.

Common Questions About Embracing Challenges

Finding strength in life's difficult moments

Resilience isn't about bouncing back immediately or pretending you're fine. It's built gradually through small, intentional steps. Start by allowing yourself to feel what you feel without judgment - resistance to emotion actually prolongs difficulty. Then focus on tiny wins: getting through one day, one hour, one task. Each small success rebuilds your sense of capability. The VM Method - Ground, Discover, Embody - helps here: ground yourself when overwhelmed, discover what you're learning, and gradually embody the person who has navigated this. Resilience grows from these repeated small choices, not from one dramatic moment of strength.

The difference often comes down to vibrational habits - patterns of thinking and feeling developed over time. Some people unconsciously maintain higher vibrations (what we call Unconscious Light Manifestation), while others have been conditioned toward fear responses. But here's the encouraging truth: these patterns can be changed. What looks like natural resilience is often learned resilience practiced so often it became automatic. You can develop the same capacity by consciously shifting your vibrational response to challenges, one notch at a time on the Emotional Guidance Scale. It's not about personality - it's about practice.

This shift happens through a concept called "contrast." Every challenge is showing you what you don't want so you can clarify what you do want. When you understand this, challenges become information rather than verdicts on your worth. Try asking different questions: instead of "Why is this happening to me?" ask "What is this showing me?" or "What do I want instead?" The Kintsugi philosophy helps here - the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold. The breaks don't diminish value; they add to it. Your challenges, healed with wisdom, become your most beautiful and valuable parts.

Challenges don't automatically make you stronger - it depends entirely on how you respond to them. The same difficulty can break one person and transform another. The difference is Conscious Light Manifestation: deliberately choosing to find growth, meaning, and wisdom in difficulty while maintaining a higher vibrational state. When you do this, you literally rewire your brain, building new neural pathways that make future challenges easier to navigate. You develop emotional muscles you didn't have before. So yes, challenges can genuinely make you stronger - but only when you engage with them consciously rather than just surviving them.
